Rep. Jamaal Bowman’s Defeat in 2024 Primary Reflects Democratic Division Over Israel Policy

In a significant turn of events, Rep. Jamaal Bowman, representing New York’s Bronx area and a member of the progressive group known as “the squad,” faced defeat in the 2024 primary elections. He lost to George Latimer, the more moderate Democratic candidate and Westchester County Executive, in a closely watched race.

Bowman’s loss was largely influenced by his stance on the Israel-Hamas War, where he vocally criticized Israel’s actions and opposed U.S. aid to the country under the Biden administration. His views, including accusations of genocide by Israeli officials and advocacy for a ceasefire, became focal points of contention in the campaign.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a pro-Israel lobbying group, played a pivotal role by funding over $1.5 million towards Latimer’s campaign and actively opposing Bowman. Despite Bowman rallying his supporters in the South Bronx, which is part of his district covering North Bronx, Yonkers, and parts of Westchester County, he couldn’t secure victory.

Throughout the campaign, Bowman faced criticism not only for his stance on international affairs but also for controversial incidents like triggering a fire alarm in a House office building, resulting in an emergency evacuation. This incident, which he justified as not wanting to miss crucial votes, led to legal consequences and a censure by the House.

Bowman’s defeat marks a setback for “the squad,” a group of progressive lawmakers who gained prominence during the Trump era. Despite this, other squad members like Rep. Summer Lee of Pennsylvania and Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan have managed to retain their seats against moderate challengers.

Looking ahead, Rep. Cori Bush from Missouri, another squad member, faces a challenging primary against Wesley Bell, backed by significant contributions from AIPAC. Polls suggest a competitive race, highlighting ongoing divisions within the Democratic Party over policies related to Israel and international relations.
